Rest in Peace, Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca)

It's a very sad day for Star Wars fans all over the world. Peter Mayhew, who portrayed Chewbacca in the original Star Wars Trilogy as well as in Revenge of the Sith and in The Force Awakens, passed away. His family made the announcement today (May 3rd morning Philippine time, May 2nd evening US time) through Peter's official twitter account TheWookieeRoars, a couple of days after his passing on April 30.

As someone who grew up watching the original Star Wars trilogy dozens of times, I have connected with the characters and the actors who positively impacted my childhood so much that the effects have lasted all the way to my adulthood. When I learned a couple of years ago that Peter Mayhew was reprising his role as Chewbacca in The Force Awakens, I started reading more about him and I learned that he was literally and figuratively a giant of a man with a kind and generous heart. This is tremendously clear when you read the many tributes written by his co-stars and other people with whom he has worked. Read some of them here.

I'd like to end this post on a more positive note to celebrate the life of Peter Mayhew and his amazing contributions to cinema as Chewbacca. Here is a video of Chewbacca being awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 1997 MTV Movie Awards where he finally gets his medal. :)

Rest in peace, Peter Mayhew. Thanks for bringing Chewbacca to life and enriching the lives of millions through your work in Star Wars and through the Peter Mayhew Foundation. May the Force be with you.
