More tragedy in Southeast Asia after Christmas. What started out as a tropical depression turned into tropical storm Seniang that hit the South of the Philippines on December 29. As a result, parts of Mindanao and Visayas experienced torrential rains and heavy flooding over the next few days, leading up to New Year's Eve.
While Seniang didn't have winds close to supertyphoon levels, it seems to have had just as much negative impact. The death toll is reported to be at 55 now. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) stated on December 31 that a total of 24 bridges and 23 roads have been heavily affected by landslides and/or flooding and a few bridges have even collapsed. According to an article in Manila Bulletin, the damage Seniang caused is estimated to be P644 million.
