We recently celebrated the birthday of grandmother Nanay. Normally, I pick the place where we have lunch or dinner but this time, it was Nanay who suggested that we celebrate in Pinác Heirloom Capampangan Cuisine in UP Town Center. We had been there a couple of times before and we really enjoyed their food so Nanay decided she wanted to dine there again.
My aunt and my cousin got there firsts since everyone else was stuck in traffic so they decided to order for everyone to save time. Interestingly enough, a lot of what she ordered were some of our favorite dishes. One of my family's favorite salads here is the Ensaladong Pako with Fried Floss (P165).
The other is the Fried Kesong Puti Ensalada (P165). Both these salads are very good, with vibrant flavors and a great contrast in textures.
One of the most interesting items on the Pinac menu, and one of my personal favorites, is the Beef Caldereta Eggplant Parmigiano (P265), which puts a Spanish-Filipino spin on the classic Italian dish by filling the parmigiana with beef caldereta.
One new item we got to try in this recent visit was the Binagoongang Lechon Kawali (P345). The bagoong taste in this dish is actual quite subtle; it manages to elevate the flavor of the pork without overpowering it. The fact that it is served with vegetables adds great balance.
As there were a lot of us, we ordered many other dishes, including the Binukadkad na Tilapia (P255)...
...and the Inihaw na Liempo (P225).
One thing we didn't order this time but which we enjoyed in the past is the Lechon Kawali with Laing (P345). We had this on our previous trip and I remember the meat being very crispy yet tender - you could cut it up with a spoon - while the laing provided a wonderful contrast to the pork.
As we were getting ready to leave, we were pleasantly surprised when the waiters came out, singing "Happy Birthday" while bringing out a wonderfully and appropriately decorated dessert. I ended up leaving a larger than average tip to show my appreciation for this incredible gesture.
Pinac serves delicious, flavorful food and we have always found the service to be very good. The waiting time for our food is also pretty short, making every meal we've had here quite enjoyable. It surprises me that in almost all our visits, there are always a lot of available tables. I hope that more people eat here since it would be a shame if this place closes. Hopefully, my family can get to enjoy more meals and more celebrations here.
